Digital Nomads in Greece – New Prospects for Remote Work and Living

Greece has established a modern and highly flexible framework for welcoming professionals who work entirely remotely, internationally known as digital nomads. Third-country nationals who conduct their professional activities through digital technologies, providing services to employers or clients outside Greece, may now legally settle in our country. The scheme addresses both employees and freelancers or self-employed individuals who wish to continue their professional activity from Greece, making use of their technological environment and the continually upgraded Greek infrastructure.

An applicant who holds a valid Schengen Visa of any state, or who originates from countries exempt from visa requirements for stays of up to 90 days in the Schengen zone, may submit an application for the granting of a residence permit of three years’ duration, with the possibility of renewal for equal periods. A basic requirement is their stay in Greece for at least six months per year. The application is submitted before the expiry of the Visa to the Department of Aliens and Immigration of the competent Decentralized Administration according to the applicant’s place of residence.

A prerequisite for approving the permit is the existence of an active contract or professional relationship with an employer based outside Greece. In the case of self-employed individuals, it must be demonstrated that their business or clients operate outside Greek territory. The applicant must additionally state explicitly that they will not provide services to employers within Greece during their stay, thereby ensuring that their professional activity remains exclusively outward-facing.

Equally crucial is proof of financial sufficiency. The applicant must demonstrate that they possess adequate net monthly income from abroad, sufficient to cover living costs without dependence on the Greek state. The minimum required income is set at 3,500 euros, an amount increased by 20% for a spouse or partner and by 15% for each dependent child. Financial capability may be proven through an employment contract, bank deposits, or other stable sources of income.

Family members of the applicant may accompany them and obtain a residence permit of equal duration. However, during their stay in Greece, they are not allowed to engage in professional activity within the country. This provision ensures that the establishment of digital nomads remains closely linked to remote work for employers abroad, maintaining the international character of the scheme.

Beyond the institutional regulations, Greece has established itself as one of the most attractive destinations for digital nomads in Europe. The mild Mediterranean climate, natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, reliable telecommunications infrastructure, and comparatively low cost of living make the country an ideal location for long-term settlement. Cities such as Athens and Thessaloniki, as well as islands such as Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, and Naxos, are steadily emerging as vibrant hubs of digital mobility. The development of coworking spaces, wide access to high-speed internet, and a welcoming culture further enhance Greece’s appeal to international professionals.

Significant tax advantages also accompany this status. Those who stay in the country for fewer than 183 days per year are not taxed on income earned outside Greece. Conversely, if they obtain tax residence in Greece, they may benefit from generous tax reductions, reaching up to a 50% tax decrease for a period of up to seven years. This favourable framework has been designed to attract highly skilled individuals seeking a safe, stable, and high-quality working environment in Europe.

Through the digital nomad framework, Greece is emerging as a dynamic hub of innovation, creativity, and international cooperation. The combination of cultural wealth, natural environment, friendly procedures, and financial incentives creates a strong ecosystem that enhances the country’s position in the global competition for digital-age talent, while simultaneously contributing to the development of the local economy and society.
