Residence Permit in Greece for the European Union Citizens

The EU citizens have the right to stay in the territory of Greece during the period of three months. The members of their families shall have the same right. Lots of above mentioned persons for various reasons, more often for the cause of their professional employment or studies, need a residence permit, issued by Greek authorities for a longer period. The Hellenic Police regional departments are responsible for acceptance and consideration of residence permit applications. The aforementioned authorities issue the Residence Cards the expiry date of which is marked as “unlimited”.

The preconditions to obtain the Residence Card in Greece are:

a) an employment contract or a confirmation of the self-employment practice;

b) the availability of funds to cover the expenses of the EU citizen and his or her family members for an unlimited period of staying in Greece;

c) a basic health insurance package;

d) the enrolment to an educational institution, higher or secondary, for a course of an educational or a professional training program. This paragraph includes a basic health insurance as well sufficient to cover expenses provided by the insurance legislation.

This article is mostly written to inform the citizens of the European states, who already resides or is just planning to move to Greece for the purpose of fulfilment of their professional activity or studies.

For a spouse of the EU citizen, who is a third country national, the 5-year residence permit is issued by the corresponding Authority.
