Second Generation Residence Permit and Acquisition of Greek Citizenship

There are many foreign families living in Greece whose children were born and attained their education here. According to the provisions of the law 4152/2014 and to the amendments made to it by the law 4332/2015, the third-country nationals who have reached the age of majority, are able to apply for a personal right of residence (Άδεια διαμονής δεύτερης γενιάς) provided all the required documents shall be submitted to the immigration service. So, for instance, foreign nationals graduated from a Greek school among other documentation shall have to produce the certificate of education for a school programme lasted for at least six whole years.

This type of the residence permit is granted for five years and is automatically extended for the same period. The only condition for the extension of this category of residence permit is the previous residence permit, the photocopy of the passport and the health insurance. The administrative fee for the issuance of this residence permit is 300 euro.

The second generation residence permit holders also have right to acquire the status of a Greek citizen, as they respectively are the certified graduates of secondary school (γυμνάσιο και λύκειο), of Higher Educational Institutes (Α.Ε.Ι.) or of Technological Educational Institutes (Τ.Ε.Ι.).

Further, pursuant to the above-mentioned law (4332/2015), the several more categories of the third-country nationals are allowed to obtain the Greek citizenship. They are minors or those who already reached the age of majority and who were born or who attained education in Greece. Specifically:

– children born in Greece, who by the age of 6–7 were enrolled in a Greek school to the first class (δημοτικό) and who regularly attend classes;

– children whose parents (at least one of them) had the Greek residence permit for a period of five years prior to their birth;

– children of the long-term residents or of the holders of any of the following identity cards: ΕΔΤΟ, EU citizen ID, member of the Greek or EU national family ID;

– minor third-country nationals who completed nine classes of primary and secondary education (διμοτικό και γυμνάσιο) or six classes of secondary education (γυμνάσιο και λύκειο), as it is confirmed by the certificate.

The Law Office of Mrs Kasatkina-Kouskou Svetlana performs services concerning the obtaining of the residence permit for second-generation immigrants who were born or attained education in Greece as well as provides legal support during the process of the Greek citizenship acquisition.
